PFAS, or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) refer to refer to a family of thousands of manufactured chemicals that have been used in consumer, commercial, and industrial products worldwide since the 1940s. In food packaging, these additives helped provide oil and water resistance.

Studies have found that PFAS chemicals do not break down in the environment, and can contaminate soil and drinking water sources. Additionally, they have been linked to human health issues.
